Diagnostic Assessments

When learning isn’t easy and making progress is hard, motivation can quickly fade. With most people, there is usually a reason behind the difficulties.

Assessment Types

At The New Ways Learning Centre, we complete SASC approved full diagnostic assessments (FDA) and screening to see if a Specific Learning Difficulty (SpLD), such as dyslexia, dyscalculia or ADHD may be an underlying cause.

We offer:

  1. Dyslexia and dyscalculia diagnostic assessments for age 8+

  2. Screening and skills assessments for learners younger than 8

  3. Exam Access Arrangement (Form 8) assessments

Neurodiverse profiling to investigate strengths and difficulties (SpLD, ASD, ADHD, dyspraxia also including attachment difficulties and trauma).

About Our Assessments

A full diagnostic assessment aims to identify strengths and difficulties in specific areas key to learning and making progress. A full understanding of this can influence teaching and learning styles and ensure the right support is in place.

What to Expect

  • The assessment usually takes 3-4 hours (with breaks as needed) and can be completed over one or two sessions

  • Assessment involves tests of ability, core language, memory, attention and concentration, cognitive processing, reading, writing, spelling and maths (if identified as a difficulty)

  • All diagnostic assessments are approved by the Joint Council for Qualifications (JCQ) and the SpLD Assessment Standards Committee (SASC)

  • After the assessment you will receive a detailed report explaining areas of strengths and difficulties and the impact this is likely to have on learning and progression. Recommendations, strategies for support and resources will also be detailed

If a full diagnostic assessment is not appropriate (due to age or other reasons) a skills test may be helpful. This involves measuring key maths and English skills to identify gaps in previous learning and /or key language, memory and processing skills commonly associated with dyslexia and other SpLD.
